Designing for the New Millennium

A designer is someone who plans out the shape or design of an object before it is actually made, usually by sketching plans or drawings. Designers are needed in many industries and some you wouldn’t think would require such a skilled professional, but there are many. The automobile industry for example is a good example of where designers are needed by companies to help create new designs or modify existing ones for optimal efficiency and safety.

Another industry that requires a designer to come in and design products is the fashion and cosmetic industry. In the clothing industry you will see many different types of clothing laid out on a runway and the designer who created them all will be showcased. Fashion designers can go from one showroom to another designing and creating new clothing ideas as well as altering and improving on designs that have already been shown. Many women find this a fulfilling and interesting field because not only do they get to see all of the beautiful clothing they can create, but also get to see what looks best on a man as well as what doesn’t.

Graphic and web designers also fall into this category. A graphic designer is responsible for coming up with logos, lettering, and layout for ads and websites. They will often work with people on advertising and marketing materials as well as working in the development of electronic and web projects. A web designer will be responsible for coming up with the graphics and images used on a website for a company. These experts in this specific profession enjoy coming up with cutting edge layouts and unique images for a website in order to make it appealing and visually stimulating.

Then we have interaction design. Interaction designers are responsible for making the user experience pleasant and fun for users of a website, product, or service. This could range from making a site user-friendly to offering interesting features that encourage users to interact with the website. For example, a social networking site could use interaction designers to make it fun and exciting for users to join the site and interact with other members. Designers in this particular field may also work on digital customer servicing or studying customer needs.

Finally, we have print design. Though not technically part of the graphic design field, this segment includes many talented graphic designers who focus solely on the aesthetic qualities of a print product. This could include anything from logo creation to developing an attractive webpage. The main goal of print designers is to make a quality product that looks great and is appealing to consumers.

If you’re interested in becoming a part of this growing field, there are many schools and colleges that offer specific degrees in the visual arts. Courses for a degree in Visual Communication allow students to develop skills in all of the different types of visual communications. Those wishing to pursue careers within the visual arts should choose a school or college that specializes in motion graphics design or equivalent programs. Most colleges and universities now offer programs specifically geared towards aspiring graphic designers. You can find the perfect school by browsing through the many options available online or at a local physical institution.
